Furniture Has Changed A Lot Over The Years

Furniture is a noun that can be used to describe any movable objects that are to be used to help in any human activities. This can really refer to almost anything. Beds help with sleeping, tables with eating and chairs for sitting. Really any thing mobile in a home or office can be considered furniture, any thing used to hold objects or used for storage.

Furniture is not just a useful product but is also considered an art form by many people and can be used to decorate any living space. Above and beyond the functional and artistic uses many pieces are used in a symbolic or even religious manner. Furniture can be made from just about anything including but not limited to metal, plastic, and wood.

Now with all the fancy things you can pick up at your local department store you might not think that furniture has been an important part of human culture for a very very long time. Evidence of furnishing exists in ancient paintings from the neolithic period, in sculptures in Pompeii, and tombs including furniture have been excavated in Ghiordes, Egypt, modern day Turkey, and modern day Vietnam.

Through out history furniture pieces have changed drastically. Starting in the Neolithic Period from three thousand to twenty five thousand years BC there are a large number of stone furnishings that have been found in Scotland.

Luckily for us there was a wood shortage in the area during that time so most homes and in the area have been build out of stone and include furniture such as dressers, cupboards, beds, shelves, seats, even early aquariums for raising and eating limpets. The stone dressers where the most important and central piece in these ancient homes probably used to display and show off wealth or religions objects.

Later in history during what is considered the Classical World there are pieces that still exist from the 8th century BC Assyrian palace of Nimrud including tables and inlaid serving stands. Carpet has been found dating to this period in a frozen tomb in Siberia. Ancient Egyptian beds have been discovering in Tarkhan in the tomb of Queen Hetepheres along with some of first chairs. Chairs have also been found in Ancient Greek.

Early modern Europe usually made their furniture of heavy oak wood and would carve very ornamented designs. These Baroque designs are characterized as being gilded and opulent usually incorporating lots of carved designs. During this time period the designs where usually inspired by Greco Roman art.

In the 19th Century there where many changes in style and even a revival style including Neoclassicism, Rococo, and Gothic. The Aesthetic and the Arts and Crafts movement along with Art Nouveau were some of the new styles during the 19th century

Adding Palm Trees to your Home Landscaping

Palm trees can be a great asset to your home’s landscaping, adding vibrancy and tropical style to your front- or back-yard’s design. A good looking yard is essential to increasing the value of your house, and palm trees can be just the thing your yard needs to stand out. Here are just some things to keep in mind if you’re thinking of adding palms to your home landscaping. >

The Right Time for Planting
The best times for planting palm trees in your yard are the spring and summer months. Palms are tropical plants, and as such they need warm weather and a lot of sunshine. Now, if you already live in a tropical or Mediterranean climate, you can start planting any time of the year.

Do Some Research
Look into the growth patterns of your palm trees before you buy them. Pay attention especially to how wide they grow and how tall by visiting a great palm tree nursery. You don’t want to end up with palms that are too big for your yard or with root systems that intrude on your home’s foundation or cause damage to your pool or other elements of the yard.

Don’t Plant Too Close to the House
This is one of the biggest mistakes that people make when adding palm trees to their landscaping. Palms may look small and harmless when they’re young, but they grow very quickly into huge tropical giants that can take over your roof and cause damage to your walls and windows if you position them too close to your house.

Spread Them Out
You don’t want to go overboard and start planting as many palms trees as will fit into your yard. Three is typically a good number, depending on how big your outdoors space is. Position the palms in various parts of your yard in a way that is visually appealing and organic. Don’t cluster them together or plant them in evenly spaced rows. The trick is to make palm trees an accent in your landscaping. You still need to think about traditional design elements and other plants that will look good as part of the yard. Adding colorful plants and flower around your plant trees will make them look even better.

All You Need To Know About A Ceramic Fan Heater

With the Fuel prices skyrocketing to never before seen highs, using a ceramic fan heater has become the best way to heat up during winter. A ceramic fan heater is a safer and more energy efficient alternative to other conventional heaters, its portability and efficiency only adding to the advantages it offers. Here are few things you should know about a ceramic fan heater, and some answers to some of the frequently asked about them.

1.What is a ceramic fan heater?
A ceramic fan heater is a type of Electric Fan Heater that generates heat by passing currents of electricity through wires embedded in ceramic plates. They are the latest breed of the different types of an electric fan heater, mainly popular for being more energy efficient and safer than the rest.

2.How does it work?

A ceramic fan heater mainly works with ceramic plates and aluminum baffles. Currents of electricity are passed through the ceramic which heats it, and the heat is then absorbed by the aluminum baffles which in turn heats up the air that is blown from a fan. The air then proceeds to heat up the surrounding. It is a safe, efficient process.

3.How is it different from the different types of an electric fan heater?

A ceramic fan heater is a much more efficient option than other types of electric fan heater like coil heaters. A coil electric fan heater can only provide minimal source of heat limited to a small area, and not an entire room. Important considerations when planning to remodel your basement

Remodeling your basement may sound so easy, but you need to figure in several factors before you actually undertaker. Note that the basement is one of the most important parts to any house, and health issues are critical whenever you think of using your basement for whatever purpose. This article highlights six of the most important considerations you need to make with regards to this Combustion appliances All fuel dependent house appliances require proper ventilation. As much as the appliances are usually safe, conditions such as back drafting and spillage are known to cause serious pollution in your house. In most homes, the basement is used to store these appliances which include clothes dryer, water heater and furnace. If you keep such appliances in your basement and are planning to remodel it so as to add some living space to your house then provide adequate ventilation for the appliances.

Airflow As much as proper aeration is usually available in all parts of your living rooms, you should pay special attention to basement ventilation. The basement usually has high humidity level than other parts of the house, something that makes it damp than living rooms. Ensure you have a good air supply and controlled moisture level by installing a reliable mechanical ventilation system. Moisture Moisture is one of the worst enemies for any basement because minute water problems usually end in disasters, if not controlled properly in time. Orange is Not Only a Fruit

Fortunately weve already seen the first snows of the year and can soon expect the last frost to fall, thus signalling the dawn of spring and all the colourful flowers that will bring, and our editorial, centred on the application of specific hues in the garden, continues this week with the vibrant colour orange.

Here are just five of our favourite orange blooms:

Alstroemeria Orange King

The Peruvian Lily, as it is otherwise known, is a fully frost hardy, tuberous species of perennial, best suited to the middle of the borders in your garden. These plants will show rich, vibrant, exotic-looking orange blooms in mid to late summer. They are also excellent to take cuttings from and will propagate readily if planted correctly. They prefer moist but well drained and fertile soil, ideally situated in full sun or partial shade. It is important to mulch them regularly in their first two years and ensure that this mulch is dry during the frosty season to prevent root damage. Unfortunately this cultivar is not complete with a scent, but they are good for cutting to take into the house and do last well in water.

Azalea Gibraltar

The Gibraltar variety is an upstanding deciduous shrub with a spherical bushy habit, good autumn colour and scented, early summertime flowers of a vivid fiery hue with frilled petals. Expect a spread of 1.3m high and wide if the correct growing conditions are provided, namely a moist acidic soil with a rich humus content. While the plant is fully hardy, it should still be planted in a sheltered spot. Partial shade is preferable and its shallow rooting makes your vigilance against frost essential to its survival, so mulch around the plant with ericaceous compost to protect them. This cultivar is ideal as a border plant or on sloping ground though will perform equally well against a wall or trellis.

Campsis Madame Galen

The Trumpet Vine, as its otherwise known, is a perennial and deciduous climbing vine from which you can expect vigorous growth and attractive foliage. As the name suggests the blooms of this plant will be trumpet shaped and will show a rich orange in late summer and early autumn. Though this plant is a climber, it may require a year or two to mature properly and thus additional support in the way of trellis is recommended. Fortunately, the Madame is not especially picky about her soil types as she will tolerate most levels of acidity and combinations of clay, loam or sand, provided you provide her with a sunny spot, preferably a west facing wall to aid with her climbing habit.

Crocosmia Zambesi

Crocosmia is a deciduous, cormous perennial that forms clumps of lance-shaped green foliage and tubular, deep orange inflorescences on tall arching stems in late summer to mid-autumn. Similarly to the Madame, Zambesi copes with virtually any soil type provided it is well drained and protected from frost-this protection can be assured by draining the soil thoroughly. A sunny or partially shaded position is best and, if sheltered, they will stand erect and not need staking. To ensure healthy growth, divide the clumps in spring so as to avoid encroachment ,or an imbalance of nutrients and sun, between specimens and pre-emptively prepare the soil with a fertilizer or humus to provide them with a good start.

Potentilla Tangerine

This is a small, deciduous, grow-anywhere shrub with orange-yellow, saucer-shaped flowers which will show over a long flowering season, throughout summer and autumn, alongside small grey-green leaves. It has bushy upright habit, and is a very low maintenance plant that will thrive in the majority of soils, aspects and location, but with best long term results in partial sun and moist grounding. After 1-5 years of growing you can expect Tangerine to reach full maturity with an approximate spread equal to its height of 1.5m.

Steps To A Green Lush Lawn

Lawn Care Tips

1. Remove the debris
One of the best things that you can do to get your lawn in shape
for the coming season is the remove any debris; such as branches and rocks that may have accumulated over the winter. Not only will this help give your grass room to grow, but it will also prevent safety hazards once mowing season begins.

2. Do not over f ertilize with nitrogen
Traditionally, many people would prepare their lawn with high amounts of nitrogen-based fertilizer in the spring. Unfortunately, this often leads to a significant amount of damage to the grass. If you are going to use nitrogen, be sure to wait until you have mowed at least a few times before you fertilize with nitrogen and wait until there will no longer be frost on the ground.

3. Use controlled release fertilizers
If you are going to use a fertilizer in the spring, then you are best to look for one that contains nutrients that are released slowly over time, rather than all at once. You should also consider fertilizing over time, so that you help your grass to grow slowly rather than all at once.

4. May 1st is a good date to start weeding out crabgrass
In most areas of the country, crabgrass does not start to root until around the middle of May. Therefore, if you are going to apply an anti-crabgrass formula to your lawn it is a good idea to begin doing so around May 1st. Of course, this is not set in stone and if your climate is unusually warm or you notice crabgrass developing earlier, you can feel free to apply the formula earlier in the year.

5. Seed your lawn in the fall, not in the spring
Although many people do prefer to seed their lawn in the spring, it is not as optimal as seeding in the fall. Although it may seem that new grass would have a hard time surviving the winter, it is actually more at risk of damage from the high heat and sunlight of summer. Therefore, consider seeding your lawn before winter this year!

6. For best results, use a blended fertilizer
A high-quality fertilizer should contain a small amount of nitrogen that is non-water soluble, potash and phosphate. The key to a balanced formula is knowing how much of each of the ingredients your lawn really needs. There are also other minerals that are frequently added to fertilizers – some lawns require these and some do not. Depending on your soil type, geographic
location and climate, the fertilizer that you choose needs to contain the right amount of each nutrient. Check with your local gardening center to learn more.

7. The darker your lawn color, the better
Do you realize that your goal should be to get your lawn to the darkest possible color? With this goal in mind, you will have a way to determine how well your lawn and garden preparations are working. Of course, it may take you several seasons to determine the correct approach, but in the end your efforts will be rewarded.

8. Consider a mechanical seeder for best results
If you find yourself needing to seed or re-seed your lawn, it may be more work than you are anticipating. Therefore, a mechanical seed spreader may be an investment worth making. Or, consider renting one from a local lawn care center. There are also seed sprayers, however they are not recommended for inexperienced landscapers because of the precision that must be applied to achieve proper coverage.

9. If you want f ast results on your lawn this season, consider sodding –
If you dont know what sod is, you probably have seen it and dont realize it! Sod is simply instant grass. You can purchase sod in squares or rolls, or you can hire a professional to create your lawn. Sodding is best done in the late spring.

10. Find out how short you should be cutting your grass
Before the mowing season begins, you should take care to find out what the best height is for your lawn. Most people who experience problems with their lawn burning are cutting it too short. And, those whose lawns get out of control between mowing may not be going low enough. A good rule to keep in mind is that you should never mow more than 1/3 of the visible grass when you are mowing in order to avoid damaging the blades.

11. Prepare a watering schedule
Do you realize that when you water your lawn several times a day in short intervals, you may not be helping your grass to grow? Studies have shown that the best watering technique is to water for an extended period of time at infrequent intervals. Much like nature waters your lawn with rainfall.
For example, if you live in an area with clay soil you really need to water for about 5 hours at a time a few days a week. Most people do not water this way, but for the best results this is what you should do.

12. Dont skip spring lawn and garden preparation
If for some reason you opt not to do preventative spring maintenance on your lawn and gardens, you will undoubtedly pay for it for the rest of the year! While you may be able to take some shortcuts, be sure not to completely skip this important step.

13. Never skip raking
It is just as important to rake your lawn in the spring as it is in the fall. Thatch is what accumulates on your lawn during the winter to protect the roots from snow and freezing temperatures. This thatch must be removed in order to
keep your lawn healthy. Pros will tell you that even a half of an inch of thatch
accumulating can cause serious problems with your lawn. So, dont skip this
important lawn care step!

14. Raking can show signs of more serious problems
You should rake your lawn deeply every spring, because when you do you are not only removing dangerous build-up, but you are also freeing any tangled grass blades. Additionally, if your lawn has been affected by snow mold or other problems over the winter, raking may eliminate the eventuality of bare patches.

15. Aeration is important when traff ic is high
If you have a high traffic lawn – or even just some spots that get a lot of foot traffic – you should aerate every spring to avoid a condition known as compaction. If you see a significant amount of moss build up in your lawn, then this is a sign that your lawn could be in need of aeration. You can get an aeration tool that is inexpensive at your local lawn and garden store.

16. Keep an eye out for moss
If you see a significant build up of moss in and around your lawn and garden, this could indicate significant problems including a need for aeration or a need to combat high acid levels in the soil. Both are simple procedures,
which will not require a significant investment of time. However, it is important to address the problems as soon as possible to get your lawn healthy for the coming season.

17. Watch for bare spots
If you see bare spots developing throughout your lawn as a result of your pets, or high traffic, you can do what is called overseeding. Basically, you will be placing seed in the bare spots to sprout new growth. The best time to do
this is late in the fall, when temperatures are mild and the sun is not as hot as in the spring and summer.

18. Use preemergent herbicides
The difference between conventional herbicides and preemergent herbicides is that while conventional herbicides kill weeds as they are located, preemergent herbicides treat your lawn to prevent the growth of weeds, crabgrass and other irritants from the time of their application. There is a specific window of time in which the herbicides are effective when applied, check with your local lawn care center to determine the best time for your specific region.

19. Aerate first and then apply chemicals
If you intend to aerate your lawn or garden, do so prior to applying any chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers. Otherwise, you will be wasting the chemicals. Also, herbicides form a blanketing shield over the soil. Aeration will puncture this blanket, which may lead to problems.

20. Be on the lookout for dandelions
Dandelions are probably the largest lawn pest known to man. If you want to keep them from spreading once they begin to appear, snap off the head of the flower before it turns to seed. Otherwise, you can expect to have a sea of yellow blanketing your lawn all summer long. You can treat dandelions upon emergence with a spot killer. Preemergent herbicides are generally ineffective
against dandelions.

21. Check out your mower
Spring is a good time to perform preventative maintenance on your mower, and to make sure that it is working in optimal condition. At the same time, you can take a few minutes to check your other landscaping tools to ensure that they are in good repair for the coming season.

Elements Of Interior Design

Whether you are working with existing furnishings and fabrics or starting from scratch with an empty room, you should always use the elements and principles of design as a guide in choosing everything. The elements are your tools or raw materials, much like paints are the basics to a painter. The elements of design include space, line, form, color, and texture. The principles of design relate to how you use these elements and are balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale, and harmony and unity.

Element #1: Space
Space defines the boundaries and sets the limits on the functional and decorative things you can do. Usually you will not determine the space; instead, you will be faced with the challenge of using the existing space effectively.

Element #2: Line
The lines in a room are second only to color in importance when it comes to setting the overall mood or feeling of a room. The lines of window fashions should support the dominant line of the room. In most situations, the dominant line is straight (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) rather than curved. Your choice of emphasizing the direction of lines will determine the mood you want to create.
Vertical lines add height and dignity, creating a more formal atmosphere. Vertical lines also balance the horizontal lines found in most furniture.
Horizontal lines tend to create a restful, informal feeling. They work well in casual rooms or as relief to the strong verticals of formal rooms.
Diagonal lines attract attention and lead the eye. They can be disturbing unless supported by verticals or opposing diagonals.
Curved lines add a softening effect and keep the room from becoming too stiff. Use curved lines with some restraint to keep the room from becoming too soft and overly feminine.

Element #3: Form
Lines that join together produce the form, or shape, of an object, which in turn impacts the overall feeling of a room. Straight lines create rectangles, square and triangles. Curved lines form circles and ovals. The rectangle is the most popular form and is often the dominant shape in a room. Triangles provide stability and curved shapes soften the contours of objects.

Element #4: Color
More than any other element, color can make a room beautiful. Color can set the mood. It can make a room warmer or cooler, larger or smaller. It can hide unsightly features or call attention to the center of interest. Even with the simplest furnishings, the proper use of color can transform a room.

Element #5: Texture
Texture is playing an increasingly important role in home decorating. Visual texture is a materials apparent smoothness or roughness. To maintain and enhance a casual feeling, use fabrics that are more heavily textured, nubby or rough visual texture. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as silk, moir, chintz and silk-like looks support a more formal feeling in a room. Using several levels of complementary textures adds variety and maintains interest. However, it is a good idea to avoid dramatic contrasts in texture.
